Local Artists Take to the Plaza Downtown

ST. LOUIS — The newly renovated Old Post Office Plaza at 8th and Locust Streets in downtown St. Louis will be the setting for a new series of live art demonstrations presented by Art Saint Louis. The series, Art in the Plaza, will showcase local talent as St. Louis regional artists practice their craft in the Plaza and interact with the public.
Weekly visual art demonstrations in a variety of mediums will take place midday, from noon to 2 p.m., beginning Wednesday, October 2, and continuing throughout the month, on October 9, 16, 23 and 31. The series is free and open to the public.
Art in the Plaza will include demonstrations in chalk art, watercolor, oil painting, encaustics, face painting, acrylics and body casting. Featured artists include Michael Anderson, Angélica Avendaño, Russell Conklin, Muriel Eulich, Amelia Fawcett, Jennifer Hayes, Henryk Ptasiewicz, Katie King, Erin McGrath Rieke, Megan Rieke, Angela Mircsov, Julie Snidle and Chelsea Soronen.
The program adds to a growing collection of cultural offerings downtown spearheaded by Art Saint Louis, and is made possible through sponsorship from Downtown Now!, The Private Client Reserve of U.S. Bank and U.S. Bancorp Community Development Corporation, the St. Louis-based community development subsidiary of U.S. Bank.
Adding to its 25 years downtown, Art Saint Louis recently renovated a 2,700 square foot retail space on the south side of the Park Pacific building at 1223 Pine Street, where it has opened a gallery/café hybrid in partnership with local coffee roaster Mississippi Mud Coffee Roasters. The organization also recently launched Pop-Up STL (http://PopUpSTL.com), a pop-up gallery program modeled after the Chicago Loop Alliance’s popular Pop-Up Art Loop program and similarly aimed at celebrating the work of contemporary artists while strengthening businesses and catalyzing urban renewal. Pop-Up STL currently showcases regional art in four retail spaces on Washington Avenue.

Call for Artists: Live Art in Downtown St. Louis

Art Saint Louis is seeking St. Louis regional artists who are interested in presenting live art demonstrations for Art in the Plaza, an event series that will take place this fall in the Old Post Office Plaza on Locust Street and 8th Street in downtown St. Louis.
The newly renovated Old Post Office plaza is a lively place mid-day with people enjoying the outdoors on their lunch breaks. Art Saint Louis is bringing artists to the plaza to engage with the community in a public space and broaden the audience that our region's artists impact. This event will take place the first four Wednesdays in October: October 2, 9, 16 & 23, and on Halloween, Thursday October 31, from noon to 2 p.m.

Thanks to everyone who joined us at the opening reception last Saturday for Under The Influence and The Sketchbook Project! Under The Influence remains on view through October 10. We're open six days a week, Monday and Saturday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Tuesday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bring your friends and family and show them what art in St. Louis is all about!

Art Saint Louis is out to further the vitality of our city in a fresh way! We are in the final stages of creating a new cultural and social destination in one of our city’s treasured historic buildings, the Park Pacific building at 1223 Pine Street in downtown St. Louis. Working with architectural and design firm Lawrence Group, owners of the Park Pacific building, local coffee roaster Mississippi Mud Coffee and Niche Interior Design and Home Furnishings, our goal is to create a gallery/café hybrid, a place our community will repeatedly visit to enjoy dynamic exhibitions of local art and an inviting atmosphere in which to meet, study and relax. The gallery will feature sofas, tables and chairs in the heart of the exhibition areas, outdoor seating, free WiFi and a coffee shop serving locally-roasted brews. We want our new gallery to be an inviting point of connection between artists and audiences in St. Louis, a playground for the ideas, conversations and connections that shape our community.
CROSSING THE FINISH LINE
With early financial support from the artist community and from the Whitaker Foundation, we began construction and renovation work the gallery/café in May and are continuing that work with plans to open to the public in July. Through volunteer labor and pro bono professional services, we have worked hard to reduce construction costs to a bare minimum. Necessary repairs include framing, plumbing, floor repair, electrical, IT, signage, HVAC, drywall and painting. These construction costs total $58,570. An additional $15,000 is needed to help cover what remains of these expenses and enable us to continue visual art programming in St. Louis. To raise these much-needed funds and sprint to the finish with this project, we're turning to the innovative crowd-funding platform Kickstarter.com. All funds raised through our Kickstarter campaign will be exclusively dedicated to covering remaining construction-related expenses on this project.
HOW DOES KICKSTARTER WORK?
Part of what makes Kickstarter unusual (and exciting) is that it’s an all-or-nothing funding platform. Our Kickstarter goal is $15,000. Art Saint Louis must collect enough pledges through Kickstarter.com to reach that goal by July 13, 2013, or else our backers’ credit cards will not be charged and no funding will be generated. But that’s not going to happen! We’re confident in the generosity of the St. Louis community and the value of this project. With your help, we will do it! And thanks to our café partners, Mississippi Mud Coffee Roasters, we've got some fantastic rewards for our Kickstarter backers.
