Jurors’ Statements

“(all the) Feels asked submitting artists to express, depict or evoke emotions and feelings as we navigate our ever-evolving place in the world in these uncertain times. 122 artists submitted 296 artworks in multiple media that stirred me as a juror: I found so many heartfelt, dynamic, moving, engaging, solemn, and reflective examples of human moods and dispositions. Winnowing down to a selection for this exhibit was a challenging task as this theme touched each participant’s production so uniquely.
I found that some artists created works that depicted the human form in facial or bodily expression in ways that illustrated distinct aspects of the human condition. Others referenced events and experiences that translated to an emotional response for the viewer. Additionally, many figurative and abstract works used elements of line, color, texture, movement, and rhythm to create evocative responses that touched  the psyche.
I hope that the audience finds many works that sync with them on multiple levels and bring them to a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around us. I am gratified to have had the opportunity to participate in this process with my co-juror, Michael Quintero. I appreciate the dedication of the Art Saint Louis staff to bringing visual arts to the community, and especially for the support of Artistic Director, Robin Hirsch-Steinhoff.”

— Erin Vigneau Dimick, artist, Executive Curator, SIUE University Museum

“As I sit in my studio in the year 2022, I am overwhelmed by the feeling–-to say the least-- that I am living through a historic period of our country and the world. After enduring two years of a global pandemic coupled with a profoundly changing national political landscape, the world feels upside down, unsettled, contracting in some ways and expanding in others. How is one supposed to deal with all of this? What is the role of artmaking in an environment where the better angels and the darkest impulses of humanity seem so extremely juxtaposed?
This exhibition is not about answers but rather exploration. These works explore the space between the individual and the collective. The space between thought and emotion. The space between loss and healing. The space between despair and empowerment. The space between harsh realities and dreams of a better world. These days, I find it difficult to walk through life without at least a little bit of unease in the back of my mind. However, these works reminded me that fellow artists are out there dealing with the same feelings that I am, They create works that affirm we are not alone and it’s ok to feel what we feel.
I am grateful for the privilege of serving as a juror for this exhibition. Thank you, Robin Hirsch-Steinhoff and Art Saint Louis, for this opportunity.”

— Michael Omichi Quintero, artist, Professor of Art, St. Louis Community College Florissant Valley
