JUROR'S STATEMENT
“I was honored to be asked to jury Art St. Louis’ XXXVIII, The Exhibition this year. As always when I am asked to jury a show, I try to clear my mind and look at all of the potential works with fresh eyes. I try not to pick to a theme (unless I am requested to do so). I look for pieces that move me, make me stop and look again, works that spark a reaction. However, sometimes without intention, after the selection process is complete, certain themes or narratives emerge. I found that to be the case with this show. As with many people my life continues to be somewhat defined by the pandemic. There is constantly a “pre” or “post” identification and discussion on what is better, what is worse. In this Exhibit, after I studied my selections, I noticed that the works fell into three categories: people, place, and things. To me this relates back to the pandemic in this way: People- the connections we had lost or strengthened. Place – the wheres we could and couldn’t go and Things – the mundane that became so important because it took up time and energy that needed to pass. Lonely dogs waiting for their owner to return, expectant joy in a young magician, and ordinary blueberries speak to the people, place, and things that were forever impacted over the last two years.”

— Jennifer Perlow, owner, PS Art Consulting
