Juror's Statement
“As a curator, I continue to be in awe of the way visual artists interpret the world around them. As a juror of this year’s 37th annual Art St. Louis, The Exhibition, I had the difficult task of selecting from a talented group of artists. Thankfully, those submissions represented a multiplicity of creative voices which made the process inspiring and fun.
Art St. Louis XXXVII, The Exhibition hosts a strong showing of works by a talented group of regional artists exploring a wide range of media including ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, and textiles. My approach to jurying the exhibition was to choose, from a submission of over 400 artworks, the strongest pieces, in concept and fabrication, to communicate the talent of each individual artist and their ideas. Because of the range of mediums, styles and concepts, I embraced the challenge to consider the perspectives and interests that would create a cohesive exhibition that represents the diversity of the art making in this area with respect to the mission of this gallery with a long history of dedicated service to its audience and arts community members.
After spending time reviewing each of the individual works and looking at the overall submissions, eventually a stylistic dialogue occurred and I simply responded to a visual conversation that seemed to emerge from the artist’s work, whether figurative or abstract. A number of works, are representative of the lush landscape around us and the unique and historic architecture of our city. Some, experiment with materials in an elegant balance with concept that is at once playful and dramatic. Others, are reflections on the new world we now live in, with meditations on our past, present and future.
Considering the many challenges the past year-and-a-half have presented to us, I am happy to see that the artists have continued in their pursuits and production of new work. The artists assembled here embrace their practices, and as an exhibition, communicate the importance of the arts and its role in developing healthy and vibrant communities.
There is a great deal of complexity and diversity of ideas in the individual works that were submitted. I hope that my selections bring to light the wealth of artistic talent represented here and celebrates the mission of Art Saint Louis and its role in supporting artists.
I am grateful to Art Saint Louis for this opportunity to review the submissions and to really get to know better the talented artists and witness the skill and passion of artists in our region.”
