Art St. Louis XXXVI, the Exhibition
Juror's Statement

“It was a pleasure to jury the exhibition Art St. Louis XXXVI, a project that showcases the talent of artists in the greater St. Louis region. The goal was to represent in the exhibition the exciting variety of media, styles, and themes present in the submissions, which reflect all levels of artistic experience, from academically trained to self-taught. Jurying this exhibition in the middle of a global pandemic and a nationwide reckoning with systemic racism directly informed the frame of mind with which I considered these artworks, reconfirming the power of art to advance understandings of the human condition. While several of the works selected for inclusion in the exhibition make direct reference to the current social context, others explore themes of nature, the body, and identity more broadly. Each of these subjects takes on a renewed sense of urgency and inflection in a moment defined by isolation, contagion, and human fragility. The resulting presentation offers compelling perspectives on some of today’s most pressing issues as well as contemporary approaches to traditional genres, including natural and urban landscapes, still lives, portraiture, and abstraction.

I would like to thank all of the artists who submitted their work for review. I also extend my gratitude to Robin Hirsch-Steinhoff, Artistic Director of Art Saint Louis for the opportunity to jury this exhibition and for her thoughtful installation.”
