Good and Evil

What is good? What is evil? Is good the opposite of evil? The absence of evil? Are they mutually exclusive, or do they intersect, overlap and intertwine? Explore the possibilities as Art Saint Louis presents Good and Evil, a juried exhibition featuring works in all media by 38 St. Louis regional artists from Missouri and Illinois. Works delve into the concepts of good and evil, whether together in contrast or in isolation, including but not limited to controversial, inspirational, shocking and challenging subjects such as politics, drugs, war, power, money, death, life, love, sex, freedom, morality, conscience, religion, and more. Please note that there are adult themes featured in this exhibit and some works might not be considered appropriate for children. Join us in the Art Saint Louis Gallery at 1223 Pine Street in downtown St. Louis for this thought-provoking exhibition.

Good and Evil includes paintings, photography, drawings, assemblages, sculpture, and much more. Jurors for the exhibition are Tim Eberhardt, nationally exhibited ceramic artist, St. Louis, MO; and Nicole Dutton, artist, Curator, William & Florence Schmidt Art Center, Southwestern Illinois College, Belleville, IL.

Jurors' Statements for Good and Evil:

"What it is to be human is my primary art concern. Good and evil, the two extremes of our duality-embedded life, is a universal dichotomy we all must recognize and decide - or, rather, we should ideally passionately CHOOSE where we stand, and live in that spot acting as we have chosen. How do you define pure good or evil? I - we - can easily recognize evil, and I can unequivocally say that a show of art titled "Good and Evil" is pure good! I thank and say to all the entrants that my choice of what is in or out of the show should be irrelevant to you. I believe that choosing to make art is absolutely good."

"I considered works that reflect the theme, both simplistically and at a more complex level. Artworks with black, white and red, or highly gestural, moving works, seemed to be more obvious choices. Works that deal with ambiguous subject matter also found their place in the exhibition. I believe the concept of "evil" is simply the perversion of good, and that good intentions can lead to "evil" results. So for me personally, the terms are grey, not black and white. I believe that "good and evil" is "and," not "or." It was important to me that this concept be reflected in the exhibit.
It was a privilege to work with the wonderful Art Saint Louis organization, my curatorial confidante Robin Hirsch, and my new art friend and co-Juror Tim Eberhardt. I appreciate what you do for the St. Louis community and the arts!"

COFFEE WITH THE ARTISTS: SATURDAY GALLERY TALKS

 
Join us in the Gallery on the following Saturdays when we host free one-hour Gallery talks at 11 a.m. with featured artists from the current exhibit, Good and Evil. Guests can enjoy complimentary coffee tastings courtesy of Mississippi Mud Coffee Roasters while learning about the artists and their artworks.

Some of the artists may bring in samples of their other work or also present a demo of their media & techniques. This is a walk-and-talk Gallery Talk, so guests will walk with the artists through the exhibit as they talk about their works in the Gallery.
