Please join Art Saint Louis for our 30th annual all media, all styles, all themes juried exhibition, Art St. Louis XXX, The Exhibition, presented in the Art Saint Louis Gallery in downtown St. Louis.
Our 30th annual Exhibition was juried by artist Nancy Newman Rice, a founding member of Art Saint Louis. From over 500 artworks submitted by 120 St. Louis regional artists, Rice selected 54 artworks in a variety of media by 43 Missouri and Illinois artists. Works featured in this year's exhibit include ceramics, digital media, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, video, wood, and more.
Art Saint Louis would like to thank McCarthur's Bakery and decorator Angela Dinkelman for the incredibly delicious and exceptionally artistic five-tier cake created in honor of our 30th anniversary exhibition. JUROR'S STATEMENT
Art St. Louis XXX, The Exhibition
"I remember the first Art St. Louis exhibit held in a raw loft space. The event was invitational and included art faculty and independent artists from the St. Louis area. It was an encyclopedic view of contemporary art in St. Louis at that time and widely attended.
Watching this annual exhibit evolve into a functioning organization with multiple exhibits each year has been wonderful. There are far more independent artists from various backgrounds who now make up the majority of participants; and it is gratifying to see how the organization has grown both in numbers of members and in community support.
Having taught painting, drawing and printmaking at various times for 36 years, I have to remind myself that skillful work is not necessarily art. And I will add, that for the most part, the entries to this exhibit were competent and skillful.
Technical skill and appropriate craft work in tandem to convey meaning. The artwork that succeeds is one that is not only readable but also worth reading. Content and meaning are inseparable and not limited to narrative themes or text driven art. The viewer’s interaction is the ultimate purpose of successful work of art. (Please note that interaction and glance are not the same, nor are looking and seeing.) For example, the minimalist work of Donald Judd and the floor pieces of Carl Andre require spatial participation to fully understand the relationship of each piece to a particular site or enclosed space, while in a two-dimensional work of art, the pictorial space, image, or the action on the surface is the key to understanding the artist’s intent. My approach to viewing a work of art is based upon the quality of the content and the legibility of its means of communication.
The artist’s acceptance or rejection in a competitive exhibit should never be taken as a comment on the worth of the artist or the artist’s potential for success. Woody Allen said that “showing up” was a major factor in determining his success. For an artist, showing up is analogous to devoting time to the studio, and trying to determine what ever it is you want to say and how best to say it.
Time will be the judge."
