PAINTING: Reconsidered, Deconstructed is a juried exhibition featuring 38 artworks by 30 St. Louis regional artists from Missouri and Illinois.

Please join Art Saint Louis for our first exhibition of the new year, PAINTING, Reconsidered, Deconstructed, a juried group exhibit presented in the Art Saint Louis Gallery in downtown St. Louis. Art Saint Louis will host a free opening reception Saturday, January 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will remain on view through Thursday, February 19, 2014.

Gallery hours are Mondays 7 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays 7 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturdays 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.* *The cafe closes at noon on Saturdays. Closed Sundays & holidays. Free & open to the public.

For this all media juried exhibition, we asked artists to consider how they use paint as a material as well as an object. Works submitted for our Jurors consideration could address paint in a static, object-based way, or the works could be about the action of painting as well as the documentation of that action. Artworks in other media—such as digital media, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture­—that explore, reconsider or deconstruct painting and/or the idea of painting were welcome for jurying, too. All explorations & interpretations of the theme were invited and all styles and techniques were encouraged.

For the exhibit, artists submitted works in all media and our Jurors selected 38 works by 30 Missouri and Illinois artists for the show. Works selected for this show include paintings printmaking, mixed media, photography, 3-d video, video, and more. Serving as Jurors for this exhibit were Stefanie Jacobson Kirkland, artist, educator and Director of Exhibitions, Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design, St. Louis, MO; and B.j. Vogt, artist, independent curator, Board President, Critical Mass for the Visual Arts, St. Louis, MO, and Facilities Manager and Preparator, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis.


PARKING
Not sure where to park when you are visiting Art Saint Louis? Located on Pine Street just West of Tucker, there are parking meters that run Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m.-7 p.m. (bring Quarters!). There's also paid hourly garage parking in the Park Pacific (be sure to take your parking ticket with you—that is your key back in to the parking garage). FREE EVENTS
COFFEE WITH THE ARTISTS: SATURDAY GALLERY TALK
Join us in the Gallery on Saturday, February 7 when we host a free one-hour Gallery talk at 11 a.m. with four of the featured artists from the current exhibit, PAINTING: Reconsidered, Deconstructed. Guests may enjoy complimentary coffee tastings courtesy of Mississippi Mud Coffee Roasters Cafe while learning about the artists and their artworks. Artists may bring in samples of their other work or also present a demo of their media & techniques. Guests will walk with the artists through the Gallery as they talk about their works on view in the exhibition. Seating is very limited.

"It is just such a creative surface that confronts the artist-creator – his canvas on which he builds the world of his intuitions and where in a similar way he regulates the flowing forces of colour and painterly energy in a multiplicity of forms, lines and planes.” – Malevich

“PAINTING: Reconsidered, Deconstructed examines the act of creating a painting. Painting as a noun is defined as the process or art of using paint, in a picture, as a protective coating, or as decoration. When jurying this exhibition I asked the questions: what are the core ideas of painting when it is deconstructed; what goes into the creation of a painting? The answers were: mark-making, building of the surface, and relationships of space and form within the piece. For me, material manipulation was left as an open ended sense of wonder; could any material function as “paint”?

The work in this exhibition show a wide breadth of how these principles can be reconsidered and reorganized. It was important to us as jurors to illustrate the formal aspects of traditional painting techniques juxtaposed with just one singular idea of painting. I challenge the viewer to reconsider their ideas of what makes a painting.”

"When jurying the works for PAINTING: Reconsidered, Deconstructed, I considered how the artists engaged both the process of painting, as well as paint as a material substance in an effort to create new forms and working processes that diverged from traditional notions of what 'painting' is. Works focused on conceptualizing mark making, image reproduction, and the functionality of paint as material helped set the platform for what was selected. Moving forward from these concepts, the works in this exhibition investigate new ways of understanding the traditional function of painting as a documentation of either the artist's actions or a replication of objects and scenes from daily life."
