Request for Proposals: Angad Arts Hotel

In partnership with Angad Arts Hotel ( / @AngadArtsHotel), Art Saint Louis seeks design concept proposals from visual artists at work in the St. Louis region as outlined below, for a new series of numeral-based artworks to be commissioned and created for permanent display in the forthcoming Angad Arts Hotel (AAH) located in the Grand Center Arts District at 3550 Samuel Shepard Drive, in St. Louis, Missouri. The series will include 149 small, wall-mounted artworks, approximately 8 inches wide/high, to be securely fastened to the walls in the corridors outside the guest rooms, one artwork beside each guest room entrance door.

149 room numbers will be given to the winning artist (i.e., 29, 134, 78, etc.) to create a series of artworks wherein each featured room number (one room number per artwork), however rendered stylistically, will serve as the principal focal point in each composition. We are seeking artworks where the rendering of the room number is itself an original artistic expression and visual anchor for the work, and is combined with, surrounded by or otherwise contextualized by other creative elements—a number within an artful setting.

Proposals are sought for work in 2-D media, or low-relief 3-D media, fit for wall-mounted display. This may include but is not limited to calligraphy, drawing, painting, graphic design, photography, video, printmaking, glass, assemblage, collage or fiber. Ideal final output size is approximately 8 inches wide/high, and in no case larger than 10 inches wide/high.

AAH will be the first hotel in the world where guests can book their rooms not only by room type but also by the emotion of color – Blue Tranquility, Green Rejuvenation, Yellow Happiness and Red Passion. Thus, each guest room will be either tones of blues, greens, yellows or reds. As regards design concepts for the artful room numbers, artist may take this color-of-emotion scheme into account but by no means is this a prerequisite for selection.

Winning artist will be awarded a $5,000.00 commission fee. Materials required for the production, reproduction and display of the final artworks, including any third party print services or other reproduction costs, and installation/display hardware, will be selected and purchased by Angad Arts Hotel. Winning artist may, in the case of digitally created/delivered artworks, be required to provide digital vector files of the artwork for reproduction purposes.

Open to individuals 18 years of age and older living in the St. Louis, Missouri region and surrounding 200-mile radius. Individuals living farther than 200 miles from St. Louis are not eligible. (Chicago, IL and Kansas City, MO are not eligible.)
