Memento Mori September 14-October 17, 2024

Please join Art Saint Louis for our first exhibition in our new location at 2801 Locust Street, Memento Mori, featuring new artworks by 74 STL regional visual artists from Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky.

We are pleased to present Memento Mori, our Fall 2024 exhibit on view in the NEW Art Saint Louis Gallery at 2801 Locust beginning September 14, 2024 and on view through October 17, 2024.

A free public reception was held for this exhibit on Saturday, September 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. Guests joined us to check out our new Gallery, view the exhibit, meet the featured artists & Juror, and enjoy complimentary beverages courtesy of the featured artists.

ABOUT THIS EXHIBITION
Memento Mori is a Latin phrase meaning “remember you must die” or “remember death”. For this exhibit, we invited St. Louis regional artists to submit original artworks that honor and remember loved ones who have passed as well as works that examine death, consider mortality, address the fragility of human life, and celebrate lives lived.

Memento Mori will present more than 75 original artworks in a variety of media including ceramics, collage, digital art, drawing, glass, metalsmithing, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, video, and woodworking. We invite you to visit our Facebook album for Memento Mori which includes highlights from our opening reception, gallery views, and more photos of the new gallery and inaugural exhibit.

Congratulations to our Award winners as selected by co-Juror Travis Lawrence: Best of Show Randy Simmons; Awards of Excellence Trevor Juenger, Beth Robinson, Douglas Simes, and Lynnette Watts; Honorable Mentions Suzy Farren, Elizabeth "Betty" Moore, Kerra Taylor, and Andrea Vadner.

co-Juror's Statement
“The phrase “Memento Mori” is one that is near and dear to me and has found itself literally spelled out into multiple pieces of my own artwork.  After experiencing a brush with death at the age of eighteen, my rite of passage into adulthood carried with it the reminder that which lies around the corner may be sooner than we realize.  I have spent my adult life contemplating mortality and the mystery of what comes next.  Being invited to juror a thematic exhibition of this same motto was an honor.
The submissions for this exhibition explored a diverse range of interpretation.  As expected, we had several engaging depictions on the notion of death and dying.  However, what seemed to be most prevalent, was the portrayal of experiencing life.  Several of the artworks display the struggles we endure through our time here on earth, or the mourning for those we have lost along the way.  Yet so many also expressed hope and a celebration of this short-lived moment.
Like life itself, we all have our own journey and are fortunate to have the arts to assist along this path towards our next steps.”

—Travis Lawrence, artist
