Art Saint Louis is pleased to present Human Touch, our third in a series of virtual art exhibitions presented during the global pandemic. This all media juried visual art exhibition is presented November 15-December 15, 2020— entirely and exclusively online on the ASL website, in a virtual gallery, and on our social media platforms.

The exhibition features 40 original visual artworks in all media created during 2020 that focus on human touch and close contact as it has been impacted by the global pandemic. This impact includes what we are missing, craving and unable to experience due to social distancing and health risks, as well as the fear involved with potentially dangerous contact.

For countless families and individuals across the world, the pandemic has cut off vital, visceral expressions of solidarity and empathy at a time when such expressions are most needed. Human touch, an irreplaceable cornerstone in every culture and people group, has gone missing, giving way to sterile alternatives, virtual contact and social distancing. Grandparents aren't able to hug their grandchildren, friends aren't able to embrace, cohorts can’t shake hands, we live our public lives withdrawn and masked. With this call for entries we ask our region’s artists: How has human touch and/or its absence affected you, your view of the world, your loved ones and friends? What do you see in this widespread shift in human behavior today, and how do you envision its aftereffects?

For this juried exhibit, 39 STL regional artists submitted 83 artworks for Juror Robin Hirsch-Steinhoff's consideration. From those entries, she selected 40 artworks by 32 artists from Missouri and Illinois for this original exhibition.

The 40 artworks presented in this exhibition explore a wide range of experiences that relate to Human Touch represented in media including ceramics, collage, digital media, drawing, mixed media, painting, pastels, photography, plaster, and printmaking. In addition to the images featured below and in the Virtual Gallery included below, you can also view all artworks in our Facebook album here.

Human Touch is presented November 15-December 15, 2020, exclusively online here on our website, in a special Facebook album here, and on Twitter and Instagram; on the ArtLoupe mobile app, and in our virtual gallery hosted by Exhibbit.
