Window to the Soul April 13-May 16, 2024

 Please join Art Saint Louis for our Spring 2024 exhibition, Window to the Soul, featuring new artworks by 49 STL regional artists.

We are pleased to present Window to the Soul, our Spring 2024 exhibit on view April 13-May 16 at Art Saint Louis featuring works by 49 St. Louis regional artists from Missouri and Illinois.

For this juried exhibit, artists were asked to consider what the adage, “the eyes are the window to your soul” means to them and how do they explicitly or implicitly explore that meaning in their artwork?

Humans often hide their emotions and sometimes it is the eyes that most authentically reveal and communicate how an individual feels, especially with things too challenging to verbally express or things we are too self-conscious or even ashamed to directly convey. In this way, the eyes can mask, reflect, and illuminate truths. This show includes imagery that focuses on the eyes and how humans mask or illumine emotions or motivations.


Spiritually, there are numerous faiths and belief systems where the eyes are considered an access point to the soul or a portal to a divine power or supernatural plane. So, in this show there are also artworks that explore spirituality and how the eyes might exist within that realm of human experience.


Window to the Soul features 59 original artworks in a variety of media including ceramics, collage, digital art, drawing, glass, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture, textiles, and more.

Window to the Soul is presented at Art Saint Louis from April 13-May 16, 2024. A free public reception is held for this exhibit on Saturday, April 13, 5-7 p.m. Join us to view the exhibit, meet the featured artists and Jurors, and enjoy complimentary beverages courtesy of the featured artists.

Art Saint Louis is free & open to the public six days a week. Gallery hours for the show from April 13 to May 1) are Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Closed Sundays & holidays and between exhibits.

OUR JURORS

We are honored to have the opportunity to work with artists Dawn Blum and Najjar Abdul-Musawwir as our exhibition co-Jurors.
• Dawn Blum artist, Curator, William & Florence Schmidt Art Center, Belleville, IL. Previously, Dawn served as Adjunct Associate Professor, Southwestern Illinois College (2005-2022) and part-time lecturer at Fontbonne University. Dawn also was a freelance photographer for twenty years. MFA Fontbonne University (2012) and BA in Environmental Studies, Maryville University of St. Louis (2002).
• Najjar Abdul-Musawwir, Professor, Judge William Holmes Cook Endowed Professorship, School of Art & Design and Africana Studies, Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Najjar holds a BA (1992) and MFA (1997), both from SIU Carbondale. His work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and abroad, including Africa, Asia, and Europe.

 Juror's Statement
 
  “I am honored to have had the opportunity to jury the Window to the Soul exhibition. The craft and creativity displayed across media, including digital drawing, painting, traditional drawing, and photography, speak to the breadth of artistic expression.
  The submissions showcased the artists' technical skills and displayed their far-reaching interpretations of the theme. Each piece offered a unique perspective, giving me a tiny glimpse into each artist's mind. As a juror, I was inspired by the work and grateful to witness the vast talent and imagination within our artistic community.
  To those whose works were not accepted into this exhibition, rejection should not deter you; instead, let it fuel the fire of your passion for creating art. Artistic endeavors are inherently subjective, and not being selected does not diminish the value of your creativity or the merit of your expression. Let this experience serve as a catalyst for your artistic aspirations, propelling you to grow as a creator with renewed dedication and enthusiasm.

PARKING RECOMMENDATIONS
Art Saint Louis is located at 1223 Pine Street in downtown St. Louis. There are parking METERS on Pine Street and Olive Street & other nearby streets. Parking meters run 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Fines are steep ($20), so don't let your meter expire. Visit Downtown St. Louis.org's website for additional parking suggestions. You can also download the handy Parkmobile app, whereby you can pay for and monitor parking meter via your mobile phone.


Hourly paid parking is available with limited hours in the PARK PACIFIC GARAGE on Olive just West of Tucker. The garage entrance is on the South side of Olive. Parking is at your own expense and payable by credit card upon exiting the garage. Access to the garage & hours are currently limited. Be sure to take your parking receipt/ticket with you when you exit your car to visit the Gallery or you won't be able to get back in to the garage to get to your garage. Your parking ticket is your key to get back in to the garage. Art Saint Louis cannot validate parking.
The Gallery is easily accessible by PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION with MetroLink and MetroBus with MetroBus stops nearby.
If you are uncomfortable driving downtown, you might want to consider a carpool or rideshare to our location.
