Personal History

Personal History January 7-February 15, 2023

Please join Art Saint Louis for Personal History, our first in-Gallery exhibit of the new year featuring original artworks by STL regional artists from Missouri and Illinois.

Graphic design by Emily Crull.Graphic design by Emily Crull.

Personal History is a multi-media juried exhibit with original artworks that focus on sense of self and the version of ourselves that we see in our mind's eye, as well as what we present for others to see.

Imagery and concepts featured include self-portraits and other artistic interpretations of personal history. Reflecting inward, outward, looking back in time and remembering past selves as well as our ancestry, this show includes images that run along many timelines and viewpoints. We hope that visitors to the Gallery are able to find a bit of their own selves reflected in the artworks in this show.

For jurying, 72 St. Louis regional artists submitted 139 original artworks in all media from which our Jurors selected works by 51 artists from Missouri and Illinois for the exhibition. The 63 artworks in the show include ceramics, collage, digital art, drawing, mixed media, painting, paper, photography, printmaking, textiles, and video. Congratulations to Emily Moore and Connie LaFlam on the sale of their works featured in this show.

We invite you to view our Facebook album for this exhibit which includes images of all of the artworks that will be featured in the show.

Co-Juror's Statement
“It was an honor to jury the exhibition Personal History. I was struck by the wide variety of subject matters and media submitted. And I was continually impressed by the talent of the artists and the fascinating references to the theme of the exhibition. In making my selections, I focused on the initial visual impact and then tried to look for how creatively the artists interpreted the theme. Of course craftsmanship, design and composition must always be considered as well. I believe the result was a group of work that is distinctive in its variety, reflecting the diversity of personal history in our community of artists.

— Naomi Sugino Lear, artist, Professor of Art,
Visual Arts and Music Department, Columbia College, Columbia, MO
