Honoring a St. Louis Leader

Taking a moment today to pay tribute to the tremendous leadership of JP Cartmill, an extraordinary, behind-the-scenes community activist who recently completed her term as President of the Board of Directors of Art Saint Louis. The guidance Ms. Cartmill brought to Art Saint Louis proved an invaluable help throughout one of the most critically important and pivotal periods in our organization's 29-year history. Among the many initiatives achieved under her leadership were the hiring of the organization's Executive Director, the continuance of the VOICES Artist-in-Residence program, the launch of several new outreach programs and, most recently, the relocation and construction the Art Saint Louis gallery and café in downtown St. Louis and the successful capital campaign that facilitated it.

JP guided our organization with great expertise, steadily and patiently leading by example, and always with a strong vision for the future. She showed a great sense for how to move an organization forward, seeing the path from a high vantage point of nonprofit know-how, and at the same time repeatedly demonstrating a willingness to jump into the trenches of everyday tasks as needed to ensure the organization's progress. What a rare and invaluable combination of qualities in a board member—in any leader! Art Saint Louis' promising future is owed in large measure to the groundwork JP helped lay these last several years, and I'm pleased to publicly acknowledge her invaluable contribution and express thanks on behalf of our entire organization.

JP is succeeded as Board President by Roy Kramer, another savvy and seasoned nonprofit leader and a CPA at Brown Smith Wallace LLC. I'm equally grateful to Roy for his outstanding commitment to upholding the standard of excellence JP modeled for the St. Louis community.
